Australian Margaret River Wines
The Margaret River area is one of the most prominent wine regions in South Western Australia. It is particularly favoured by wine producers for its specialist climate, one that has been compared to that of Bordeaux and is considered near perfect. As a result the Margaret River wine region has developed into a major world wine region in the short time since the first vines were planted in 1967.
The Margaret River wine region is populated with many small wine producers making premium quality Australian wines. Its because of the regions climate that this is made possible, as it has a good spread of warm temperature throughout the year and rainfall levels at intervals similar to that of the Mediterranean. Margaret river wines are known for their diverse use of grape varieties, in both varietals and blends. Consumers can find everything from Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc to more unusual grapes varieties like Sangiovese and Viognier from the Margaret River region.
The excellent climate conditions offer some wine from the Margaret River region a certain complexity, distinctive fruity flavour and a great potential for cellaring. All of the wine is made by around 150 wine producers located in the region. Wine from the Margaret River area is held in high regard the world over and makes up a considerable proportion of Australias premium wine market, 20%. This percentage is testament to the quality of wines coming out of the region as the Margaret Rivers contribution to wine production on the whole in Australia is just 3%.
